THE 'WIPE OUT' EXERCISE.
This 'exercise' describes how to make your own composer rhythm.
(in this exercise the new rhythm fits to a song, titled as 'Wipe Out')

You should realise that it can be done in a quicker way by using a midisequencer-program, like Cakewalk or whatever. However most people doesn't have it. So I stick with the KN7000 tools and used no other software.

Material:

  • a midifile

  • a pencil and paper

  • the original song ('Wipe Out' from The Surfaris)

  • a kn7000

  • patience and persistence ;-)

DOWNLOAD the 'exercise pack', including:
1. the midi-file I used
2. The KN7000 Composer rhythms of Wipe Out
3. The Wipe Out KN7000-song recorded with Easy Record

THE 5 STEPS

FASE 1. Global analyse of the song.

  • I listened several times to the original song (on LP/vinyl)

  • and I listened several times to the midi-song;

all this with the intention trying to analyse the song. Kind of estimate if the song could be made suitable as a composer rhythm.

FASE 2. More detailed analyse of the song.

A. LOADING THE MIDISONG

  • I loaded the midisong in the KN7 sequencer;

  • choose if you whish to load as GM or NX;

I loaded the midisong as GM to obtain the original soundsettings (instead of using NX). It depends on the original quality of the midisong if you choose for GM or NX in relation with personal preference.

B. EXAMENING THE TRACKS

  • I played the midi-versions on very slow tempo;

  • muted some tracks to examen which instruments are in the single tracks

In this case it looks like:

  • TRACK 1: melody1

  • TRACK 2: bass

  • TRACK 3: accomp

  • TRACK 4: melody2

  • TRACK 5: empty

  • TRACK 6: melody3

  • TRACK 8: empty

  • TRACK10: drums

I made a quick concept of which parts of the song could be used in the various parts of the composer (intro/fill ins and variations).

I made notes on a paper which tracks and measure suits to a certain part of the composer, like:

  • A. INTRO: here comes a drumsolo with bass

  • B. VAR1: the first accomp. (variation1, two measures: with drums and bass)

  • C. FIL1: the first fill-in (from VAR1 to VAR2)

  • D. VAR2: for the drumsolo 2

  • E. FIL2: the second fill-in (from VAR2 to VAR3)

  • F. VAR3: variation 3, four measures: with drums and bass

  • G. VAR4: for the drumsolo 3

  • -------------

  • H. FILL-IN: used D (from VAR4 to VAR3)

  • I. FILL-IN: used C (from VAR3 to VAR2)

  • J. FILL-IN: used D (from VAR2 to VAR1)

FASE 3. EDITING COMPOSERPARTS
In this fase the 'copy and paste' starts from the midiparts/-tracks in the sequencer to the composerparts in the composermemory.

  1. <PROGRAM MENUS>
  2. <COMPOSER>
  3. <RECORDING MEMORY A>
  4. <MEMORY CLR> : to clear the Memory A
  5. <NAMING>: in this case 'Wipe Out'

Now choose which part you whish to create (i.e.: intro, variations and fill-ins, endings)

One example (variation 1 of 'Wipe Out')

Regarding to my notes in FASE 2 I had decided that the following parts from the midisong should copied to VAR1 in Memory A.

  • measure 21 and 22: track 2 (Bass) and track 10 (drums)
  1. <PROGRAM MENUS>
  2. <COMPOSER>
  3. <SEQ TO COMPOSER copy>
  4. <MEASURE COPY> to <COMPOSER MEMORY

End of example.

Tip: don't forget to save frequently between some greater changements. Don't overwrite files if you are not sure, better to save on another place and with another name.

SUMMARY

COMPOSER PATTERN DESCRIPTION FROM MIDIFILE REMARKS
INTRO Drumsolo and bass track 10 and 2: measure 2-10 Manually added 'laugh' in measure 1 in part DRUM2
VAR1 PATTERN first accomp. pattern track 10 and 2: measure 10 + 11
VAR1-FILL IN1 fill in from V1 to V2 track 10: measure 33 Manually changed  some drums (H Tom)
VAR2 PATTERN Drumsolo 2 track 10: measure 22 + 23
VAR2-FILL IN2 fill in from V2 to V3 track 10 and 2: measure 33
VAR3 PATTERN second accomp. pattern track 10 and 2: copied from VAR1 PATTERN Added some notes in drumpart (cymbal) and changed the Tom (drum)
FILL IN fill in from V3 to V4 copied from VAR1-FILL IN1
VAR4 PATTERN Drumsolo 3 copied from VAR2 Manually changed  some drums (H Tom to L Tom)
FILL IN fill in from V4 to V3 copied from VAR1-FILL IN1
increase etc.

Notes:

  • Maybe that the measure numbers could be the wrong numbers. It also depend of the midi-setting (e.g. panel header on/of). It is more to give you an idea how to..
  • Be aware that sometimes it is needed to make a note-value conversion to another scale
  • If some parts does not suit exactly you can made a choice:
    • change or add it manual via <STEP RECORD>
    • copying from another midipart (kind of merging). Be aware that existing data the memory with the <SEQ TO COMPOSER> menu all will be replaced in <MEMORY A>.

If you want to copy various parts from various measures I recommend to use the <SEQ TO COMPOSER> to different <MEMORY>places. I.e. memory B or C.
Thereafter you can use <PATTERN COPY> <PAGE 2> to copy the wanted parts in the destination composermemory you were editing.

FASE 4: EDITING SOUNDS AND DRUMS
In this fase one can change the sounds or drumsstyles if you whish.

  1. <PROGRAM MENUS>

  2. <COMPOSER>

  3. <RECORDING MEMORY A>

  4. choose i.e. <VAR1><PATTERN><OK>

  5. choose one of the tracks f.i. <AC1>

  6. choose <PART SETTING>

In this menu you can choose the sound/drums you whish to change.

FASE 5: FINE TUNING
In this fase you can do the 'fine tuning'.

For instance in <STEP RECORD>: deleting and/or adding some notes; or in <PART SETTING> changing sounds and/or note value etc.

  • Tip: use the <SOLO>-button to switch between the individual track and all tracks

About the MSA (Music Style Arranger) setting.

  • I have choosen to set <MSA> on <ON> and with the option <PANEL MEMORY>.

  • I have also programmed/set the Panel Memories

  • Now, when using the fill-ins the Panel Memories decrease or increase.

And finally the composer is ready for take off. Only now rests the playing and recording in Easy Record of the song.

Hope you enjoy and this contribution is helpful to develop your skills on this isue.
